Harlem Dog Breed: The Journey of a Pit Bull Terrier to Become A Leader Dog

Across the United States, there are over 400 puppies being raised to become guide dogs for individuals who are blind or visually impaired. These dogs are more than just pets; they are trained assistive partners providing not only assistance but independence to their handlers. Among these puppies being trained is Harlem, a lovable pup being trained by the dedicated professionals at Leader Dogs for the Blind.

Meet Harlem: A future leader dog

Just like other future leader dogs, Harlem too, is being raised by puppy raisers. These dedicated individuals take responsibility for his upbringing for about a year, ensuring Harlem is well-behaved, socialized, and well-prepared for his official guide dog training. After this period of upbringing, Harlem will move on to receive about four months of intensive training with a guide dog mobility instructor.

Why sponsoring guide dogs makes a difference

Training service dogs like Harlem is very costly. Sponsoring dogs like Harlem enables organizations to cover these costs, and allows these service dogs to be assigned to visually impaired individuals at no cost to them. The impact these dogs make in the lives of their handlers is immeasurable. They go beyond helping with daily tasks, providing emotional support and companionship.

Harlem the Sweetheart: Ready for a Forever Home

Described as a sweet, playful, and sometimes silly girl, Harlem enjoys spending time with her peers and loves receiving cuddles from her caregivers. However, this adorable fur baby can be a bit shy, but she really shows her confident and friendly side once she feels comfortable in her environment. If you have room in your heart and home, consider adopting Harlem, and help her find the happy life she deserves.

Harlem the Pit Bull Terrier: Brave, Loving, and Deserving

Harlem is not just any dog. He is an emblem of resilience and bravery, an American Pit Bull Terrier with a heartbreaking past, having been surrendered twice by previous owners. Despite his past, Harlem is slowly learning to trust again and is in desperate need of a patient, loving forever home. His unbroken spirit even amidst adversity reveals what a true survivor he is.

The Dog Named Harlem: Good with other dogs, and waiting for you

At 36lbs and nearly fully grown, Harlem is one of three siblings who were surrendered to the shelter due to their owner’s service in the military. Harlem is known for being good with other dogs, playful, and brimming with potential. Described as stoic at first, he quickly melts into a loving fuzzball when spoken to sweetly.

The Journey of Dog Breeding

People have been breeding dogs since prehistoric times with the primary purpose of creating domestic dogs from wolves that could perform tasks such as hunting, guarding, and herding. This practice has over time resulted in specific breeds of dogs, each with distinct physical traits, temperament, and movement attributes. Each breed, today, has an official "breed standard" outlining these ideal traits.

Petfinder's Current Regional Availability

At present, the services of Petfinder are only available within specific regions because it hosts pets and adoption organizations from those listed areas only. However, there's good news for pet adopters in other regions as plans for future expansions are under consideration, offering a glimmer of hope to pet lovers around the globe.
