Do Dogs Laugh? Understanding Canine Play-Panting

Dogs can't laugh in the same way humans do, but they can make a sound similar to a laugh when they are playing. This sound is a breathy panting that is forcefully exhaled, known as a "play-pant."

How Dogs Exhibit Laughter

Play-Panting: A Canine Laugh

The play-pant is used by dogs to invite humans and other dogs to play. This behavior is often accompanied by specific body language such as play bows, reaching out a paw, or teasing jumps with a relaxed demeanor. The appearance of a dog's "laugh" includes opened jaws, a revealed tongue, and a tilted angle of the mouth, giving the impression of laughing.

Research on Play-Panting

Animal behaviourist Patricia Simonet recorded dogs making the play-pant sound and found that it had a broader range of frequencies than typical dog panting. These recordings were played to puppies, which then became more active, and the sounds even seemed to calm dogs in shelters.

Comparative Studies with Other Animals

Non-Human Primates

Research on non-human primate behavior has found that chimpanzees, gorillas, and orangutans also use a play-pant laugh when tickled, and chimpanzees can smile in a way similar to humans. This suggests that the ability to laugh or exhibit playful vocalizations is not unique to humans.

Factors Influencing Canine Humor

Breed Differences

A dog's sense of humor is personal. Research suggests that certain breeds may have more of a sense of humor than others, leading to differences in playful behavior. For example, some breeds might be more prone to engaging in play-panting and other playful behaviors.

The Concept of Neoteny

Dogs have been bred to have a juvenile mind, similar to neoteny in humans. This lifetime of youthful behavior potentially contributes to their playful demeanor and sense of humor.
